Synopsis

“Abraham Lincoln” was voted number two of the Ten Best Pictures of 1930, heralded the comeback to movie-making by one of the world’s leading pioneers – D.W. Griffith.

Building on the previous success of his films such as Intolerance and Birth of a Nation (in recent times nominated as ‘the best silent film’ ever made), this was to be Griffith’s first foray into the realm of ‘talkies’.

As leading actor, Walter Huston plays an excellent title role, along with Kay Hammond as his wife and later first lady, Mary Todd Lincoln. Jan Keith offers support in a few scenes as John Wilkes Booth, a crazed stage actor who puts an end to Lincoln’s life on that tragic day of April 14 1865.

Griffith’s focus on Lincoln juxtaposes the bitter struggle of humankind, with a worthy outcome despite torturous odds. Often perceived as an eccentric by his contemporaries. Lincoln moves through each cataclysmic event of seeming unendurable stress, with an almost saintly calmness and grace.
